No. Your lake isn't ruined. It's turning over — and if you understand what's actually happening, this two-week weird phase is the doorway to the best fishing of the year.

Summer: the layered lake. From roughly June through early September, deep lakes stratify into three distinct layers, like a latte that refuses to mix:

Fall: the mixing. As nights cool, the surface layer loses heat. Cooler water is denser, so it sinks. Every cold night, the surface water mixes a little deeper. The gap between surface and bottom temperature shrinks — 80 vs 60 becomes 72 vs 60, then 65 vs 60 — until one cold, windy night in late September or October, the last density barrier breaks. Wind finishes the job, and the entire lake mixes top to bottom in a matter of days.
That's turnover. One lake, one temperature, oxygen redistributed everywhere — for the first time since spring.
(One quirk of water physics that makes this possible: fresh water reaches maximum density at 39.2°F, not at freezing. That's why the mixing happens in fall — cooling water keeps sinking until the whole column equalizes.)
Shallow lakes and windy lakes turn over first — sometimes in days. Deep, calm, sheltered lakes can take weeks and may turn over latest. Two lakes ten miles apart can be a month apart in turnover timing. That's why your buddy's report is useless and your own lake's temperature is everything.
The Weird Phase: Why Turnover Fishing Stinks (For a While)
Here's the part nobody warns you about: the 1-2 weeks DURING turnover are notoriously the worst fishing of the fall. Three reasons:
- Fish lose their map. All summer, the thermocline was their address. Deep fish held at a predictable depth band. How to Tell If YOUR Lake Turned Over
Four field signs, no electronics required:
- 👃 The smell. Earthy, swampy, or faintly rotten-egg along the shoreline — that's bottom water reaching the surface.
- 👀 The look. Tea-stained or uniformly murky water with no recent rain. Distinct color lines across the lake (clear arm vs murky arm) mean one arm turned and the other didn't.
- 🌡️ The temperature reading. Surface temp roughly equals deep temp — no more layering. If your electronics show top-to-bottom uniformity, it's done.
- 🍂 Debris and foam lines. Windrows of leaves, foam, and scum collecting in coves — bottom detritus that got mixed up and is now floating.
One more clue that's subtler: creek arms turn before the main lake. Shallow water cools fastest, so the backs of creeks flip first. You can literally fish pre-turnover conditions in the main lake and post-turnover conditions in the creeks on the same day.
The Great Phase: What Happens After
Once turnover completes, the game changes completely — and this is what everyone's been waiting for:
- Oxygen exists at every depth. For the first time since spring, fish can go anywhere. Deep structure that was a summer desert is now livable. Bass re-colonize the whole water column.
- The feeding switch flips. Shortening days and dropping water temps tell fish one thing: winter is coming. Feeding priority shifts from "survive the heat" to "eat everything." This is the heaviest sustained feeding window of the year.
- Bait consolidates in the creeks. Shad schools that scattered during the weird phase regroup and push into creek arms chasing plankton — and the bass set up along the migration routes to intercept them.
This is the fabled fall bite: shallow wolfpacks, wolfing fish on topwater at dawn, and bass that fight like they're paid to.

Two tactical notes for the weird phase: fish faster than feels right (scattered fish are best found with reaction baits, not soaked worms), and follow the color lines — where murky-turned water meets clear water is a natural gathering seam for bait and bass.
Turnover FAQ
How long does turnover last? Usually 1-2 weeks on a mid-size lake. Small windy lakes can flip in days; big deep lakes can take three weeks or more.
Does every lake turn over? Every deep lake that stratifies does. Very shallow lakes and river-run lakes barely stratify in summer, so their "turnover" is a non-event — one more reason to know your lake type.
Can you fish DURING turnover, or should you stay home? Fish, but change the plan: cover water, fish horizontal, and target the arms that turned first. The full lake might be weird while a creek back is already on the feed.
Why am I suddenly catching small fish only? Scattered small males roam widely during transition while the bigger fish hold tighter to structure. The dinks are scouts — the size class behind them arrives when the bait consolidates.
Is turnover the same as the fall transition? Related but not identical. The fall transition is the whole seasonal migration (bait to creeks, bass following). Turnover is the physical mixing event that removes the thermocline and unlocks the full water column — it's the engine underneath the transition.
